BIO
Bowmanville-based photographer Peter Chatterton specializes in portraiture and still Life. Formally trained at Trent University in Philosophy and Cultural Studies, he is always searching within himself to better understand the world around him. This introspection mingles with inquisitiveness and empathy, coalescing in his nuanced, thought-provoking visual storytelling.
With a practice predicated on investigating and reflecting upon lived and shared experiences, Peter’s work has taken him from the small town he calls home to Kazakhstan, New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, and many places in-between. He is compelled by the unknown yet is also equally entranced by the familiar. The intersection of these notions – a result driven by conversation, compassion, and curiosity – allows him to navigate through a unique consciousness of others, affording an impression of how selfhood is ultimately integrated into the fabric of humanity.
Peter is represented by Partial Gallery.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My interest lies in psychological realism and focuses on the dynamic that exists between the everyday, phenomenology and transfiguration. I believe that I need to understand others to better understand myself, and this manifests in image-making as a method of transcending spoken language. I want to visually represent the ideas in my mind, ultimately hoping they materialize as a deeper consideration of self; and I am wholly invested in the pursuit of sharing stories. By exploring another’s journey we can gain further insight into and connection with each other, which can eventually tease out much-needed empathy. This process is especially important in bridging the gaps in our perceptions, allowing for enhanced connection – narrowing the chasms that divides us, and leading us to find an elusive harmony.
